General Motors recently announced that a deal with Chinese-based Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines cannot be concluded and that Hummer will therefore be wound down. GM says it will honor warranties and guarantees spare part supply for the years to come. The main problem seems to have been the Chinese government, which did not give its permission for the deal to go through. Rumors say that several bidders might show up at the very last minute (like the Saab-scenario), and GM has set a last deadline (May 1st) for potential buyers, but chances are very slim for the survival of one of the most iconic brands of the 90’s and 2000’s. We have found a well-written article on Hummer titled “America says goodbye to itself” – you can read it here. In the end, GM diluted the brand and based Hummers on old chassis (Chevy pick-ups etc) and fitted them with outdated engines. Hummers were more often seen on Hollywood Boulevard than on off-road trails around the world. We won’t miss vehicles like the H2 or H3, but we were keen to see the Wrangler-competitor H4 put into production with new technological solutions.
